According to WHO, the worldwide prevalence of obesity nearly tripled between 1975 and 2016. This means that 13% or 650 million of the world’s adult population was obese in 2016. Obesity is linked to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculskeletal disorders, and some cancers. Obesity is caused by an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugars among other factors. Highly processed foods and drinks consistently have added excess sugars. The best strategy is to eliminate from your diet all processed foods. But if you decide to purchase some processed food, look for foods with lowest sugar levels. Food labels are required in some jurisdications to indicate sugar amount per portion. Let's take Heinz Tomato Ketchup, the appealing organic version, lists 5 g of sugars in 1 tbsp (15 ml) of ketchup. This means that roughly 1/3 of the table spoon of the ketchup is sugar. Once I make that connection, it changes my decision whether to eat that food or not. In cases like this I would opt out of eating it.
